Chapter 7

Victor I took a deep breath as I walked into the clinic to enact the second part of my twenty-step plan to woo my mate. Last night had been the full-body massage after a relaxing bubble bath and a glass of wine while he told me all about working with Riley and Cyrus. It went well and I thought Malachi was really starting to realize that I’d never, ever thought of him as just a toy.

Today was flowers, and a winter picnic we could share if he could take a break on the bench by the back door of the clinic.

“Hello, my gorgeous mate,” I said in a husky voice when I found him using some machine that I’m sure had some type of acronym for a name.

“Vic? What are you doing here?” he asked with a smile as he turned around. His long blond hair was back in a braid so it stayed out of his way as he worked. It was so fucking sexy and gave me fantasies as I stared at it, that I almost hadn’t heard the question.

“To see if my mate can take a break from his hard work and to give you these,” I answered as I pulled two dozen red roses out from behind my back. Maybe it was cheesy or what someone would expect, but I appreciated the classics and nothing said love like red roses.

“For me?” he squeaked as he reached out and touched a petal of one. “They’re gorgeous.”

“They’re nothing compared to you, baby.” His cheeks heated up at the compliment as he took them, practically burying his face in them as he inhaled their fragrant scent. “Can you take a break?”

“Of course,” he whispered as he set the roses down, almost hesitantly. “I’m sure one of the rooms or supply closet are available.”

It hit me then. He thought I was buttering him up to get an afternoon quickie. Shit! I decided to ignore the implication and stick to the plan.

“Didn’t come here for that,” I chuckled easily as if I wasn’t freaking out that this surprise was going to shit. I pulled the picnic basket out from behind my back. “I thought we could have lunch. I know it’s cold outside, but you love snow. There’s hot cocoa, warm sandwiches, French fries, and brownies.”

“All my favorites.” He nodded rapidly as he smiled again. Now that he agreed, and saw I was serious about treating him as he should be, it was time for step three.

“I hope you believe I wasn’t here just for a closet quickie,” I said gently as I cupped his cheek. Malachi blushed and tried to duck his head.

“I shouldn’t have assumed that. That’s not your style,” he whispered as I raised his head to meet my gaze. “It’s just you haven’t visited me here yet. You also have quite the sexual appetite and I denied you last week and we’ve really not done anything since then. I figured you couldn’t take it anymore.”

“Baby, you’ve not been working here long.
